Criminal Law 2022 Update - Live with Colin Beaumont

Introduction

2022 has been another very interesting year for case-law from the Court of Appeal and High Court. We are also getting recent Commencement Orders in relation to important pieces of legislation such as the Offensive Weapons Act 2019 and the Domestic Abuse Act 2021. The Sentencing Code 2020 is now very much with us, and we are getting the consideration of it in judgments handed down by the Court of Appeal.

This virtual classroom seminar will include all the recent interesting case-law dealing with issues that criminal practitioners are called upon to consider daily, e.g. the advice that you must give in order that the client be assured of his or her one third credit at the sentencing stage; the fact that defendants can be sent to the Crown Court in their absence, assuming they are represented by a lawyer at the Magistrates’ Court stage and the matter is purely indictable.

This practical session will be of interest to anyone involved in the day-to-day practice of criminal law in England and Wales, it will take you through the legislation, relevant statutory instruments, case-law and important guidelines published by the Sentencing Council.
